Kirklees Council meeting, featuring Kirklees Youth Council
Wednesday 11th October 2017
Meeting starts at 5.30pm
Local Democracy Week showcase for councillors from 4.30pm
Huddersfield Town Hall
Kirklees Youth Council have been actively involved in each stage of the Democracy Commission’s work. As part of our Local Democracy Week 2017 events programme, we’re delighted to welcome some of our youth councillors back to the Council Chamber to launch a toolkit that will help councillors to talk to school children about local democracy.
One of the recommendations in our ‘Growing a stronger local democracy’ report is that we should help Kirklees citizens to understand the role of councillor. In our Kirklees Democracy Debate in May 2017, several of our councillors specifically asked for support in their work with local primary schools.
Kirklees Youth Council have developed a ‘Councillor Toolkit’ in response. The kit includes useful materials that councillors can take to local schools, so they can offer a fun and interactive session about local democracy. The aim is to help children and young people gain a better understanding of:
- the role of the councillor
- the ward they live in, and how it relates to the rest of Kirklees
- what local government does and how councillors make decisions about local services
- the views of their local councillors about priorities for their communities and what they do to address these
- how they can share this knowledge with friends and family
At the start of this Full Council meeting, three youth councillors will launch the toolkit, which will then be available for all Kirklees Councillors to use in local schools.
Anyone can attend a full meeting of Kirklees Council and watch from the public gallery or from the nearby Reception Room. There are also live webcasts (and an archive) of all the meetings, which can be viewed at: Kirklees webcasting
The full agenda for this meeting will be available on the Kirklees Council website from one week before the meeting date at: Council – Wednesday 11th October 2017
