About Growing Great Places

Got a great idea for making your local place even better? Want to connect with others who can help make it happen and raise funds to get going? Growing Great Places, run by Kirklees Council in partnership with Spacehive, can help you to get that great idea off the ground.

Dozens of local groups and organisations have already been successful, with their projects being backed by almost 2,500 local people and organisations. Here are a few recent examples…

  • Friendship through puppets Dewsbury
6 million+ Charitable Trust created a Syrian ‘Weeping Sister’ giant puppet with refugees and local people. They held a parade of giant puppets in North Kirklees town centres for Platforma 6 National Refugee Arts Festival. They raised £13,851 from 97 backers.

  • The Newsome Centre (Phase 1) Purchase
The Newsome Centre Community Benefit Society are aiming to set up a new community centre, cafe & event space in the former St John’s Church in Newsome, Huddersfield. 118 people and organisations backed their first project, which raised £18,145.

  • Quarry Hill Centre Community Hub
Dare 2 B Different are a Youth Focused organisation catering for Kirklees Young People and Vulnerable Adults with various disabilities. They wanted to protect The Quarry Hill Centre and grounds with security cameras, and once secure develop a local community hub for local community groups to take advantage of. They raised £6,900 from 23 backers.

  • Slaithwaite Moonraking Festival 2023
Slaithwaite Moonraking Festival is a festival of light, where wonderful illuminated willow lanterns light up the streets and crowds come together is a spectacular fire finale with music and street performance to celebrate a popular legend. They raised £28,531 from 150 backers to make their project possible.

These are just a few of the great ideas that people have come up with to help their communities connect and thrive – and we’re keen to support many more.

We’re now launching our next Growing Great Places funding round, for groups anywhere in Kirklees who are aiming to start crowdfunding this spring. Successful projects could receive a pledge of up to £5,000 from Kirklees Council.
